Tuesday, 18 August 2026
Belfast and Northern Ireland’s new professional cricket franchise unveiled as 200 young cricketers celebrate landmark day for the sport
The Belfast Wolves were officially launched today at nicssa, Stormont, as Belfast and Northern Ireland’s new professional cricket franchise prepares to make its debut in the European T20 Premier League next week.
Around 200 young cricketers from clubs across the Northern Cricket Union joined players, officials, stakeholders and partners to celebrate the launch of a franchise that will bring some of the world’s biggest names in cricket to Belfast and place the city on the European cricket stage.
Featuring international stars including Glenn Maxwell, David Miller and Chris Jordan, alongside leading local players such as Paul Stirling, Mark Adair, Matthew Humphreys and Lorcan Tucker, the Belfast Wolves will compete in the inaugural European T20 Premier League and provide Belfast and Northern Ireland with representation in a major new European sporting competition.
The launch represents a significant milestone for cricket in Northern Ireland and forms part of a wider ambition to establish Belfast as a centre for world-class cricket, while creating new opportunities for clubs, volunteers and young people across the province.
The event also highlighted the strategic partnership between the Belfast Wolves and the Northern Cricket Union, with both organisations committed to strengthening participation, player pathways, community engagement and the long-term growth of cricket across Northern Ireland.

Beyond professional cricket, the Belfast Wolves and Northern Cricket Union are committed to delivering a lasting community legacy through a range of participation and inclusion initiatives. Later this year, the two organisations will launch the Belfast Wolves Inclusion Hub, creating new opportunities for people across Belfast to engage with the game through programmes including Visually Impaired Cricket, Table Cricket and Disability Cricket.
The Future Wolves Festival formed the centrepiece of the launch celebrations, bringing together 200 young players from clubs throughout Northern Ireland and providing them with the opportunity to meet Belfast Wolves players, take part in cricket activities and experience the launch of a professional sporting franchise within their own community.

Every Northern Cricket Union club was invited to participate, reflecting the shared ambition that the Belfast Wolves become a team for the entire cricket community and a source of pride and inspiration for young cricketers across the province.
The launch was attended by the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Róis-Máire Donnelly, representatives from Belfast City Council and Sport NI, alongside media organisations including BBC Sport NI and the Irish Cricket Podcast. BBC Sport NI conducted interviews with Belfast Wolves Chief Executive Neil Maxwell and international star Chris Jordan as interest in the new franchise continues to grow ahead of the tournament.
The launch also highlighted the powerful connection between Belfast’s designation as European City of Sport 2026 and the Belfast Wolves’ participation in the new European T20 Premier League. As Belfast celebrates a landmark year for sport, the arrival of a Belfast franchise in a major European competition represents a significant opportunity to showcase the city internationally while creating lasting benefits for local communities through participation, engagement and development.
The event demonstrated how collaboration between Belfast City Council, the Belfast Wolves and the Northern Cricket Union can use sport as a platform to inspire participation, create opportunities and leave a lasting legacy beyond the playing field.

The launch also comes at a significant time for cricket and sporting infrastructure in Belfast. The Department for Communities recently announced that a major investment is being made in the redevelopment of Stormont’s cricket facilities, while nicssa, which hosted today’s event, is set to benefit from a £7.6 million investment programme.
Together, these developments have the potential to create a strong foundation for both elite and community cricket for years to come.
Kieran Devlin of nicssa attended the event as conversations continue around future opportunities for collaboration between the venue and the Belfast Wolves, with the facility viewed as a potential long-term home for the franchise.
Neil Maxwell, Chief Executive of the Belfast Wolves, said:
“There’s a deep connection with the game here and a strong undercurrent, and I think that’s something that we’re really keen to bring to the fore. There’s a level of passion here about the game which we want to connect to.
“As you learn more about the Wolves, our catchcry is ‘family, fearless and fun’. I think if we can make that connection with our audience and with our fans, I think that’ll be a real positive for us. I think a legacy there would be to help develop the game in this region.
“I know our team owners are not just worried about an ROI; they’re focused on how they can help the game grow in Europe, and more specifically in Belfast. So I think you’ll see a level of engagement from the Wolves that’ll be connected largely to the grassroots, where we’ll be investing resources, both financial and human, into helping grow the game.
“I think those objectives are aligned, and that’s what really excites us.
“The calibre of people, the passion for the game that comes through the NCU, and the proactivity as well – I think Callum and the team have really jumped forward and asked how they can help. We’ve been able to utilise the resources that they have, and I think that’s just built a nice start to what I think can be a really long and deep relationship going forward.

“We’ve already established an alignment with local government and with the NCU to really foster that level of inclusion and to be able to build competitions that provide an opportunity to minority groups and others that mightn’t necessarily have the chance to play cricket.
“Now we’re excited about that, and that’s all part of the family mentality that we want to establish.
“In five to ten years’ time, I think T20 cricket will be a mainstay of world cricket, and we want Europe, and Belfast in particular, to be a stronghold in that regard, having won the championship three or four times in that timeframe.”
Callum Atkinson, Chief Executive of the Northern Cricket Union, said:
“The launch of the Belfast Wolves represents a significant opportunity for local cricket. The NCU wants this to be a team that clubs across the province feel connected to and proud to support.
“By bringing together 200 young players from clubs throughout the NCU, we wanted today’s launch to demonstrate that the Belfast Wolves can help strengthen player pathways, attract new audiences to the sport and create opportunities for young people for many years to come.
“Importantly, this partnership extends beyond the professional game. Working alongside the Belfast Wolves, we will deliver new initiatives such as the Belfast Wolves Inclusion Hub, helping create opportunities through all-ability cricket while ensuring the benefits of the franchise reach communities right across our Union.”

Lord Mayor of Belfast Róis-Máire Donnelly said:
“It’s great to see people participating in any type of sport. We’re really delighted to be here and be able to support in whatever way we can. Actually seeing them out enjoying themselves and having fun, even in the rain, is really impressive.
“We’re absolutely delighted to be able to provide any support whatsoever, but particularly during the European City of Sport that Belfast has been granted in 2026. We’re delighted that we’re seeing so much sport happening throughout the city, and particularly new teams coming along, investing in our city and investing in young people.

“We have a lot of different sports in the city, and cricket wouldn’t be something that I would be too aware of, but to see 200 young people out enjoying themselves and taking part is really, really important.
“I think the legacy of anything like that is just to see that sport continue, that investment continue, and see young people wanting to continue to take part.
“It’s great to see so many young people, but also so many coaches and adults wanting to invest in our young people and take part in this activity today. Hopefully, we’ll see this increase throughout the city, in different parts of the city, and see young people wanting to take part.”
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons said:
“The launch of the Belfast Wolves is an exciting milestone for cricket in Northern Ireland and a significant opportunity to inspire the next generation of players.
“Sporting events have the power to capture imaginations, encourage participation and bring communities together. Through this partnership with the Northern Cricket Union, the Belfast Wolves will not only showcase high-quality cricket but also help create opportunities for young people across Northern Ireland to get involved in the sport, develop their skills and realise their potential.
“I look forward to seeing the Belfast Wolves inspire more young people to take up and enjoy cricket in the years ahead.”
Kyle Robinson, Sport Developer at Sport Northern Ireland, said:
“It’s terrific to be down here today.
“We see real potential for more people to get involved in sport, regardless of background, age group or ability, and we can see that here today. There’s such a range of children and young people here.
“We see Belfast Wolves as an opportunity for cricket in Northern Ireland as a whole to grow, aside from just Belfast. It’s great to see the partnership that the NCU have already brought about with Belfast Wolves. They have already engaged their clubs to see this opportunity for the sport to grow.

“Belfast Wolves will be great in terms of inspiring more people to take part in cricket, ultimately because there will be visible role models on the ground in Belfast and in Northern Ireland for young people and people from different backgrounds to see. There’ll be more people represented through the Belfast Wolves compared to before.
“At Sport Northern Ireland, we’ll be keeping a close eye on the progression of this, and it’s great to see the launch day being such a success already, with a real buzz around the place today.”
TNT Sports will broadcast the competition, with the Belfast Wolves beginning their campaign on Thursday 27 August against the Dublin Guardians at Voorburg Cricket Club in the Netherlands.
